How to Run a Fair Random Name Draw
A transparent process for checking names, agreeing on redraw rules, and sharing a random result.
A random draw can shorten decisions and remove the pressure of choosing a person. However, a missing participant, a duplicate entry, or a rule changed after the result can make a technically random draw feel unfair.
Fairness begins before the animation. State what is being selected, confirm who is eligible, and agree on the few situations that permit a redraw. Let participants see the same list and result.
Clean the participant list
Use one person per line and remove blank lines, extra spaces, aliases, and accidental duplicates. Add a minimal identifier for people with the same name.
Confirm absences and ineligible participants before the draw. Editing the list after seeing a result damages trust even when the correction is well intended.

Publish the rule before drawing
Explain whether you are choosing one presenter, an order, or a task owner. Decide whether previous winners are excluded and whether the same person can appear again.
Limit redraws to conditions agreed in advance, such as a display failure or an ineligible name that everyone missed. Disliking the result is not a neutral redraw condition.
Share the result without excess personal data
Share the screen in a remote meeting or let the group watch the result in person. Record the result and time in meeting notes when it needs to remain authoritative.
Do not paste full student numbers, phone numbers, or email addresses into a public display. Use only the minimum label needed to distinguish participants.

Frequently asked questions
Can I leave duplicate names in the list?
Only if the same person is intentionally meant to have multiple chances. For one chance per person, remove duplicates.
Does Camtool save the list?
The Random Game Zone does not save the entered list to an account or server. Record a result separately if your group needs it later.
